Vitebsk, Gotland to cooperate in energy saving, tourism
Developing economic links, intensifying cooperation in energy saving and rational use of natural resources, in the areas of culture, education and tourism are the priorities of cooperation between Gotland County of Sweden and Vitebsk, governor of the county Marianne Samuelsson said after a ceremony of signing a cooperation agreement between the Belarusian town and Swedish region on June 2.
“I see the signing of the agreement as a great achievement,” she said. Ms Marianne Samuelsson believes that joint history research is the main priority of further cooperation. “We do not doubt that Vikings from Gotland reached Vitebsk too. They were a kind of businessmen of the past and we would like to continue this tradition,” she said.
Energy saving and rational use of natural resources are another cooperation areas. As an example Ms Marianne Samuelsson cited the new ice arena which has been recently built in the country on the basis of latest energy saving technologies.
Tourism is the most promising cooperation venue. “I believe that in Sweden and in Gotland in particular there are many people who would like to visit Vitebsk,” the governor said. There are the possibility to open a direct air flight between Vitebsk and Gotland. The necessity will arise as the cooperation intensifies.
For the past three years Vitebsk and Gotland County have been cooperating within the framework of the Swedish-Belarusian-Latvian project “Panorama: Dvina/Daugava”. The main goal is to expand international contacts.
A delegation of the Swedish county will get familiar with the sights of Vitebsk, visit the culture institutions and take part in the seminar “Marketing a community. Increasing the quality of tourist services.” On June 3 the guests will visit Polotsk and Disna (Miory region) which are included in the project “Panorama: Dvina/Daugava”.
