A decision to construct an ice arena in Novopolotsk by 2012 was made by the Vitebsk oblast executive committee, chairwoman of the Novopolotsk town council Natalia Kochanova told BelTA.
The ice area is designed for 3,000 people. Some Br90 billion will be spent on construction of the sports facility.
According to Natalia Kochanova, the town needs badly a new ice complex. The existing arena of the sports company “Ice Hockey Club Khimik” does not comply with modern-day requirements and cannot host national and international hockey tournaments, though citizens have a great interest in ice events. The local Hockey Club Khimik-SK plays in the national top division; there are 12 children’s ice hockey teams in the town. Some 300 youngsters attend ice hockey schools. Mass skating is also very popular among citizens. The existing arena cannot accommodate the wishes of all those would like to do winter sports.
The financial assistance in the project will be provided by Novopolotsk-based companies, Natalia Kochanova added.
