Polotsk signs agreements with Azerbaijani Mingachevir, Armenian Alaverdi
VITEBSK, 28 May (BelTA) – Mingachevir from Azerbaijan and Armenian Alaverdi became twin-towns of Polotsk. Cooperation agreements were signed during the days of the 1150th celebrations of Polotsk.
Twin-town agreements between Polotsk and Alaverdi were signed on 26 May by Alexander Poznyak, Chairman of the Polotsk City Council and Mayor of Alaverdi Artavazd Varosyan. Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Armenia to Belarus Armen Khachatryan also took part in the ceremony, congratulated Polotsk on the 1150th anniversary, and noted that Polotsk is a symbol of spirituality and culture, the city of the great Christian traditions. Armenian and Belarusian peoples seek to further develop cooperation and strengthen fraternal ties, the Ambassador added.
Polotsk and Alaverdi intend to establish and expand bilateral economic, scientific and technical, cultural and humanitarian cooperation and create conditions for the development of direct contacts between entities of all forms of ownership. The Armenian and Belarusian cities also confirmed the interest in developing humanitarian cooperation. The agreement will contribute to the development of direct links between educational institutions, institutions of culture and sports, museums and theaters, mass media outlets.
On 25 May Polotsk and Mingachevir signed a joint statement on twin-town relations. Among the priorities outlined in the document will be business contacts, trade and tourism encouragement, exchange and cooperation in education and culture.
Head of Mingachevir City Executive Authority Niyazi Bayramov is confident that friendly contacts between the two cities would promote understanding and further cooperation between Azerbaijan and Belarus.
Alexander Poznyak noted that in its 1150-year history Polotsk has always valued friendly relations with different nations. “Cultural and economic contacts between our cities will continue developing as both the sides show mutual intention and interest,” he stressed.
